Cleaning the Garage Adds to Home Value
By Editor | September 7, 2007
If you are thinking about selling your home and are hoping for a quick sale, clean out the garage. Considered by homebuyers to be the third most important room in the house (just behind the kitchen and master bedroom), the garage can make or break a sale-and it does not take much to make this space more appealing. In fact, sprucing up the garage is one of the least expensive things a person can do to increase home value. “Many people spend thousands of dollars on renovations to make their home more appealing to buyers. Often, though, big remodeling projects only pay off with a percentage of every dollar invested,” points out garage organization specialist Brad Barquist. “A garage cleaning and reorganization doesn’t require permits, a work crew-other than friends and family-or a big price tag.”
Barquist suggests that homeowners should do more than stack belongings neatly. “Let’s face it: people who are thinking of buying your home don’t want to look at your stuff, and the garage is often one of the most cluttered rooms in any home. Store items in cabinets or overhead racks. This will make the garage look bigger and the extra storage space becomes a real selling point.”
As much as 50% of the total front viewable area of a home is the garage. A clean garage free of clutter adds massive curb appeal.
